Général Lafayette Farewell tour at:
Rochester-Mendon-Canandaigua-Geneva

In the service of the King

In the previous chapter, we discovered that our young Gilbert took part in all the musketeers’ reviews in front of the old King Louis XV from the age of 12.

Then he spent another year at the Versailles academy to complete his training as a young officer.

1st Duke of Ayen then 4th Duke de Noailles

Louis de Noailles, Marchal of France and Father of the youngest Adrienne future spouse of Gilbert Lafayette

His military career changed on April 7, 1773: at the request of the Duke of Ayen, he moved to the Noailles regiment with the rank of second lieutenant and joined its garrison in a stronghold in the east, the fort of the Citadel of Metz.

This promotion and change of unit were not so trivial.

(1) – Fort or fortress that commanded a town, often forming part of the wall or more rarely built inside the wall. The citadel usually served as arsenal and barracks and at times as a reduit. It sometimes watched over the town and suppressed internal rebellions.

Indeed, let us remember that the young Lafayette is among the richest in the kingdom of France. Because of his fortune, he could have just shone in high society and held a high position in the Court.

But as for his future, he saw it more on the battlefields to show his value in combat than with this fortune he had, it seems, put aside.

Others, on the contrary, thought of a different future for this wealthy young orphan. They saw in him an interesting match for marriage.
That was the case of the Duke of Ayen, who was the father of five daughters and, consequently, five young ladies who, one day, would have to have a good match from a good family.

His choice fell on the youngest, Adrienne, who seemed to be a good fit for him, but his mother was reluctant at first because of her young age (14 years old).
But the Duke had decided, and that’s how he brought this rich teenager into the Noailles regiment and promoted him to second lieutenant.

At the same time, he thus satisfied, at little cost,
the desires of a man hungry for military glory.

It was therefore behind the fortifications designed by the engineer Vauban that the young Gilbert would discover an iron discipline under the authority of the governor of the three bishoprics, Duke Victor-François de Broglie, Marshal of France.

Promoted shortly later to Captain, life in the garrison, due to his rank as a senior officer, was summed up by his presence alongside the soldiers during routine exercises, with non-commissioned officers experienced in maneuvers and an iron discipline with the troops which could go as far as beatings and even hanging in the most serious cases.
